Hinkley Point C is the UK’s first new nuclear facility in almost 30 years. Exyte Hargreaves is under contract to design, procure / manufacture, deliver, install and commission HVAC systems across the site. When the reactor goes online, HPC will generate clean, renewable electricity for the UK for the next 60 or more years.

Initial Project Brief

The provision of the work was to provide a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for a variety of buildings across both units in the conventional plant areas. The main function of the HVAC system is to provide air condition, temperature control, general ventilation and fresh air, contribution to fire containment and smoke control.

The contract scope included design studies, procurement, prefabrication, qualification, transport, erection and assistance to on-site commissioning tests of the air-conditioning equipment.

Our project scope has grown significantly since.

  • 2015 – Contract award for HPC Conventional Island HVAC systems
  • 2016 – Exyte Hargreaves commence site works
  • 2021 – Design completion of all systems / Manufacturing of first systems
  • 2022 – Installation of first system

Value Engineering

Our modular approach at HPC has included off site construction within our Bury Manufacturing Facility. This has helped to reduce site working times and potential installation risks.

Digital-first at HPC

1. Trimble Robotic Total Station has been used to integrate with coordinates from Navisworks models to use laser technology for marking out bracketry drilling locations. This is faster and more accurate for installations compared to manual methods of marking out

2. FARO Scanner has been used to capture point cloud scans of site measures and imported into Revit to design remaining site measure items. This is faster and more accurate than manual methods of measurement

3. Ricoh Theta 360° camera has been used for reality capture enabling Site inspections and walkthroughs. This is compared against the BIM Model in Dalux to see construction progress. The process is automated and visual instead of through spreadsheet progress updates

4. Dalux & tablets have been progressed on site so that all documentation is easily accessible. BIM models are also accessible via Dalux on tablets so there is no need for complex modelling software. This is all digital – leading to a paperless site

5. Synchro software has been utilised to produce 4D installation sequences and animations with accurate planning programmes. This creates a much better visualisation of project activities

6. Effortless QR Code item tracking via GTP Stratus on tablets/mobiles

It is fantastic to work with the Exyte Hargreaves team. People are willing to reach out to anyone who needs support. We’ve really enjoyed a team spirit. Everything can be frankly discussed and sorted out in a collaborative way.
