Hinkley Point C has grown into one of the largest projects, both in scale and value, for Exyte Hargreaves. The project was originally secured because of the company’s seven-decade long track record of delivery for Great British Nuclear. However, it is project innovation (and a committed on site performance) which has prompted the growth in our HPC contract.

Modularisation for the HM Building

On a recent visit to Hinkley Point C, we were taken to the roof of HM building, which is part of the Conventional Island. Exyte Hargreaves has been commissioned to deliver more than 30 large roof extract modules as part of the building’s ventilation system. HPC is a hive of activity. Constructing the modules on site would have been both difficult logistically and hugely expensive. Our answer is to build them off site.

Built in Bury

The Exyte Hargreaves manufacturing facility is attached to our Head Office in Bury. It is one of the largest of its kind in the construction sector. Over the past month we’ve been building the first of HM building’s roof modules within the factory. Quality control can be tightly managed within the factory, with a client inspection taking place before the modules are transported to site. The modules will be stored on site at HPC through August before being lifted into position by crane in September.

Digital Innovation driving HPC

Off Site Manufacture for Hinkley Point C is successful in part because of our committed approach to digital innovation. At a basic level this has meant a drive towards paperless working. In reality, it is much more than that. One example has been the use of Dalux SiteWalk technology, which performs a digital site inspection using augmented reality. Site progress can be compared digitally against the original plans, so that once the roof modules are in place on HM building their installation can be quality checked more easily. It is a planned approach to the incorporation of digital technology which is supporting the delivery of the UK’s first new nuclear facility in over 30 years.
