Niall Birkitt completes first HPC weld
Written by John Prydderch on July 12th 2024
Niall Birkitt is a member of our 2023 apprenticeship cohort, working in our Manufacturing team. Niall is a Fabrication & Welding Apprentice who has been making incredible strides in his development. In this latest article, we take a look at one of his most recent achievements on the Hinkley Point C project.
One of our most significant HVAC projects this year has been the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Island. Niall has recently joined our manufacturing project team on HPC and just completed his first solo fully welded piece of product.
When we last spoke to Niall for his Apprentice Diary, he was still only 3 months into his apprenticeship. After getting to grips with some of our fabrication machines (such as the laser cutter), he expressed excitement about moving onto welding. Since then, Niall has been working closely with his more experienced colleagues to develop his skills. Now, he’ll be regularly producing seismically qualified HVAC products for one of the most critical nuclear infrastructure projects in the country.
"This piece of work has taken Niall around a fortnight to complete in the factory. He's worked alongside Tom Oglesby, who offered him advice and guidance. Niall continues to improve and develop and is now working alone to produce items for HPC."
