Our #24In24 series is profiling the new members of team Hargreaves who’ve joined the company throughout 2024. Here is a record of our recent interview with Mechanical Design Engineer, Gary Blackburn.
Why did you decide to join Exyte Hargreaves?
The opportunity came around when I was contracting and looking for a permanent position. I had previously worked for Hargreaves 40 years ago. I worked on the Heysham 2 power station. I was a lot younger back then and it was an interesting time. I have worked in the offices as well as on site. I’ve always had a synchronicity with Hargreaves. My first grandson was born three years so we moved back into the area. When the opportunity came to work for Hargreaves I jumped at it.
Since joining, what’s been your experience of Exyte Hargreaves?
Looking back 40 years to compare the business now and then, it’s literally chalk and cheese. The company now is modern in its way of thinking in respect of looking after its employees and integrating modern technology. Unlike the past you can make suggestions and get management involved in the work. It’s a vast difference between then and now.
Can you talk a bit more about some of the things you’ve been working on?
Since I started in January I’ve been working on the Hinkley Point C project. I’ve taken over the HM building and we’re working with Hilti to complete the support calculations.
What would you say is the best part of your job?
The best part about it is that I like coming into work. The older I’m getting the keener I am to do more. The invigorating thing is the young people coming through. They have all this energy and they want to learn. I want to guide them and give them the best I can from my experiences to help them become better engineers.
Why would you recommend Exyte Hargreaves to another potential employee?
The company is very modern now and it’s bringing in a lot of new tools. It’s a great starting point for any young employee. Everybody is very friendly and willing to help. The job is very worthwhile and beneficial for your future.
