Apprentice Diaries – Wesley Kennedy
Written by Oliver Muscat on November 20th 2023
My name is Wesley and I have joined at Exyte Hargreaves as a Digital Engineering Technician Apprentice. In the first couple months all my colleagues have been helpful. I’m part of the Digital Innovation team, being trained by Robert Davies (Digital Innovation Manager) and learning to work more independently. The apprenticeship course is something that has interested me for some time. I was attracted to join Exyte Hargreaves as it started as a family-run business and has been trading for over 150 years.
As a Digital Engineering Technician I have learnt a varied of tasks within this role. I am supporting colleagues with software applications, becoming familiar with Revit, Dalux and Stratus. Currently, I have been doing the design for BIM model sheets for HS2 work. My specialised project is ITP (Inspection Test Plans). Me, Robert Davies and Zain Shahzad are using QR codes for packages and pieces of ductwork to help us track their location and project stage more easily. Other tasks I have been enjoying include using the IT Helpdesk. This works on a ticket system and I have supported colleagues with 8 tickets so far.
My apprenticeship is a 18-24 month course, depending on the x3 projects I choose. It is online every Thursday and I go 6-8 hours of the week. So far it has been a great learning experience already and I have enjoyed working in Revit and Dalux greatly as it something I haven’t used before. I like the factor of problem solving. I am looking forward to learning more about these software and others in this course!
"Outside of work I enjoy mountain biking and soon hope to be riding motorbikes. This has been my passion for over 7 years, as well as other adrenaline sports like indoor and outdoor rock climbing. Unfortunately I have a portfolio of injuries, breaking my collarbone, foot, finger and a few others!"
